Social Media in the Classroom
Bringing social media into the classroom sounds scary. Kids don't always make the best choices. They post pictures they shouldn't. They lash out against their friends in the midst of a fight. They portray themselves in ways they don't mean to. The idea that they could be doing all of these things in your classroom, or worse, with your implicit permission, is downright terrifying. However, instead of hiding from social media and banning it from the classroom, we should be welcoming it in, embracing its possibilities, and teaching kids how to use it responsibly. Isn't that our job as teachers - to prepare kids for the challenges they'll face out in the world?
Once you've accepted that social media is no more dangerous than pens and paper (and we would never ban those from our classrooms!), then you can start to recognize the huge realm of engaging, collaborative, powerful tools that social media brings into your classroom!
